Ingredients

History of the Buche de Noel according to the French historian Nadine Cretin: Buche de Noel is an essential part of the Christmas dinner all around Europe. The tradition dates back to 2500BC Europe and has its origins linked to the winter solstice. On the shortest day of the year families had a tradition of burning a huge cherry, walnut, chestnut , olive or oak log. what entailed a notion of something sacred. A little bit of wine or oil was usually poured on a log, so it could burn hotter. The tradition was performed by the eldest and the youngest in a family, what symbolized family and transmission. The embers from the burned log were kept and set on fire on special occasions to protect the house from lightning, to ward off bad luck or to improve the harvests. Depending on a region, it was burned either on Christmas Eve only or until Epiphany, 12 days later, to represent the year. The log tradition turned into the cake tradition around 1870. Several patisseries argue about the paternity of the tradition, but the idea was of creating a new Christmas dessert, like a roll that looks like a log.
